Choosing a Vehicle · 11 September 05
We had a survey a couple of weeks ago asking what types of cars folks were thinking of converting. I also get two to three emails a day from folks wondering if their vehicle might make a good EV or Hybrid.
Let’s take a look at how to determine what type of EV your vehicle will make and what it will take to get the range you need.
- Electric vehicle tax credits of up to $4k.
- Hybrid rebates available up to the end of the year.
- Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy website. Tax incentives and rebates for renewable energy and alternative fueled vehicles.
- Alternative Fuels Data Center, state and federal incentives.
- FuelEconomy.gov, be sure to check out the energy use graph. Just over 18% of the energy in gasoline makes it to the transmission.

- More details (i.e. fluff) about the planned Subaru Electric. President Kyoji Takenaka said “electric vehicles could establish a certain presence if we developed technology to charge batteries overnight.” (you mean a charger??)
- VW has announced a Hybrid Mini-van to be built in China. Since German automakers tend to favor diesel, why not a diesel hybrid?
- Instead of a car how about a portable bike?
(Brompton, Bike Friday, and Moulton) [via TH] - In Australia, GM Holden is releasing a dual fuel vehicle that will use gas or LPG. Sequential Vapour Gas Injection, baby.

- The Carolina EV Challenge – Smart Kids, Clean Cars, Green World
- Renewed interest in electric car conversions (registration rqrd). “Converting a car is the sort of thing that any determined individual could do,” said Ken Wells, a physics teacher at St. Mark’s, a boarding school in Southboro, Mass.
- Some folks want their car vegetable powered.
- Hyundai-Kai unviel new hybrid car.

- Good news on the Hydrogen front. Scientists have developed a method to store hydrogen in pellets until it is needed.
- Lies and damn lies, most cars tested fall way short of their sticker gas mileage, hybrids included.
“We are concerned about the differences,” Margo Oge, director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, said of our study. “I think we can do a better job to help consumers assess actual fuel economy.”
Computerized engine systems have improved efficiency, but the potential fuel savings has been traded for increased engine horsepower. Since 1981, horsepower is up 89 percent for cars and 99 percent for trucks - Consumer Reports fuel-efficient vehicle chart
- Hey, 3M is getting into the EV Battery Biz, although don’t get out your wallet yet:
When the funded program is complete near the turn of the century, 3M anticipates the new battery will offer a range of between 150 and 300 miles for an electric vehicle, compared with the 60 to 100 miles offered by current lead-acid technology. - Toyota’s challenges in the hybrid market. Like, I dunno, advertising the real gas mileage?

Shaun's Electric Car · 6 September 05
Shaun Williams converted a 2000 Toyota Echo into a battery powered electric car and documented the whole process on his web site.
- Q&A with an auto mechanics instructor.
- High gas prices also pushing alternative engines in Germany.
- Saving energy at home.
