In an earlier entry I mentioned all of the gauges Eve has and how it would be nice to re-purpose a few of these for EV functions. There’s a gas gauge, engine temp, and engine oil that are no longer needed, not to mention a half dozen “idiot” lights.
Yesterday I pulled the instrument cluster apart and investigated the usability of the meters. The bad news is that I probably can’t use them.
The good news is I got some great pictures!
- Thinking of turning an old Beetle chassis into an EV? Check out the Glockler Spyder kit body. I’m not sure it would be that much fun in New Hampshire winters.

James' EV part II · 17 November 05
Meet James May.
You ever have one of those weeks where your mind and hand coordination doesn’t seem to be working? Hands end up in the wrong place on the keyboard and you type a paragraph of gibberish before noticing…and then wonder if maybe it’s better that way?
I email James to get picture of him and the car.
Me and my typos. Here’s James and his cat.
Hey, it’s a nice looking cat.
- Interesting flywheel adaptor over at leftcoastconversions.com. This is the fifth EV conversion for Reverend Gadget, who was part of the Discovery Channel’s BIG series. Additional interesting stuff in the alt energy section.
- Put the Stanley Steamer, Birth of Speed event on your January calender, along with the NEDRA Battery Beach Burnout.
- Ian Wright’s EV, Wrightspeed X-1, outraces a Ferrari and Porsche at Infineon Raceway.

- In case you hadn’t noticed the link over on the far right side, we have a page of EV Resources that I try to update regularly. Just added Craig’s Electric Daytona. Craig shared an interesting link on the EVList. Check out 3D Content Central, a user library of free 3D models. Just need a 3d program now!

A bit of a diversion to try and cover something near and dear to our hearts: plastic panel and wire connectors.
If you take a look around the interior of your car you probably won’t see any screws. It’s part of the magic. Who wants a car that looks screwed together? We want contiguous, smooth entities of car-ness that speak to us in luxurious undertones.
Which reminds me of Ricardo Montalbán’s rich corinthian leather Chrysler Cordoba commercial.
- AC, DC, and Subway Power. “What is a Rotary Converter or Synchronous Converter, Alex.”
- Speaking of cool, old tech if you are in the New England area and like mechanical gizmos you ought to make a trip over to Windsor, VT and check out the American Precision Museum. It’s been a few years since I last visited. Here’s a preview.
- Over the weekend I stumbled across a few pages of in-depth info on Prius and Prius hacking. Some interesting stuff out there. This page has tons of info, but don’t click the link if you don’t have a fast connection and/or lots of spare time. Another detailed page, The 2004 Prius page, also features schematics, graphs, charts, and general hacking (check out his talking Prius movie). There’s also the CalCars project.
